During the lap band surgery, a LAP-BAND®/Realize® Band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, dividing it into a small pouch that holds a smaller amount of food and a larger lower stomach. The degree of band tightness affects how much food a person can eat and as a result, they eat significantly less, feel full sooner, and feel satisfied longer.

The band is implanted using laparoscopic (minimally invasive using video cameras) surgery while patients are under anesthesia. It is considered to be a safe and effective way to achieve and maintain a healthier weight without cutting or stapling the stomach, or modifying anatomy in any way. It is a prosthetic device that is implanted and can be removed.

As patients lose weight, their band fit will change and so periodic adjustments (using a saline solution in the band) keep them on track to meet their weight loss goals.

The gastric band (Lap Band) procedure is especially popular because it is designed for long-term use. As adjustable gastric banding surgery does not permanently change the anatomy of the stomach, the band can also be removed at any time if desired.
